DIAPHRAGM
A broad sheet-like muscle, it forms the floor of the thoracic cavity. Its origins are the inferior border of the rib cage and lumbar vertebrae. It inserts on the central tendon. The diaphragm is the prime mover of inspiration. It flattens on contraction increasing the size of the vertical axis of the thoracic cavity.
