LUNG SAMPLE WITHOUT MINIMAL VOLUME
The photo to the left shows a piece of lung tissue from a fetus that had never taken a breath of air. Even when a lung collapses, the noncollapsing, cartilage reinforced tubes retain air. The total volume of this air is called minimal volume. Lung tissue not containing minimal volume will sink in water.
