In order to retain the tattoo in the skin, the ink must be injected into the dermis. Unlike the epidermis, the dermis has a rich blood supply. Before the use of disposable tattoo needles, there was a considerable risk of contracting a blood borne infection, e.g., hepatitis and HIV.
