Prof's Guide to Reading Chapter 2: Browsing the Web

Read  Chapter 2, "Browsing the Web." pages 40 to 95. Much of this material is not new for many of you.

  • Read page 42, which tells you what you are going to learn - it prepares your mind
  • Read the "Chapter Review", pages 94 to 95, which goes into more detail
  • Finally Read  Chapter 1, "Into the Internet" itself, pages 2 to 29.  Pay closest attention to the words in bold and the figures.  You'll learn the most that way for the time expended because the mind thinks and thus learns in pictures.

This chapter defines and explains key terms: Web site, home page, portal , client-server, IP address, domain name, DNS, browse, URL.  You may use these words, but read the definitive definitions in the text.

Next it points out the components of a web page.  It talks about moving to a different page by taking a hyperlink.  Did you know that if you left (normal) click on a hyperlink, normally the new page will replace the the page you were viewing and to to get back you would use the back key.  But if you right click on the hyperlink (which could be text or a graphic), a short menu appears and the second item is Open in New Window, which if you click does that leaving you with two windows.

It explains each of the Internet Explorer icons (page 57).  An assignment will be to customize this tool bar.

It explains Favorites and History.  Rather than using Favorites, I use www.saveThis.com, which saves my favorites in cyberspace so that I can access them from any machine (the one in my office at home, while at school, in the library, visiting folk).  I can also easily share these links.  The is an assignment where you create a SaveThis account, add some links and share them with me.

It discusses saving webpage, emailing web pages and printing web pages.  Please read my page on printing.  It contains sections for printing pages from Internet Explorer, as well as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Note the text id incorrect on the bottom of page 72,  even if you right click on the selection, you must choose the Selection radio button of the Print dialog box.

The section on Risks and Safeguards is important.

Pay attention to the  @Issue:

  • Ad Filters - one of the assignments will be to download the Google toolbar which blocks pop-ups.

Then complete the following:

Make sure you understand the terms on page 96. If not, go to the page given in parenthesis () and reread these terms that are in bolded text.
That means more than just being able to select the correct choice in a multiple choice question.
If you don't feel comfortable with one or more terms check them out with:

Don't NOT do the True or False on Page 97
Do, but do not submit, the Multiple Choice on Page 97 & 98
In the Learn It Online section of scsite.com/internet/ch2 do one of the follow (see page 99 for more description)

  • Practice Test (it tells you what the correct answers should be, but you have to take the whole test first.)
  • Flash Cards (you can choose how many cards you want - and at the end the ones you missed will be listed)
  • Who Wants to Be a Computer Genius? (this is fun but you are stopped as soon as you miss a question)
  • Crossword Puzzle Challenge (crossword puzzles are a favorite of my by it doesn't tell you if you got it correct or not)
