Chapter 4 is about communicating via
- email
- Web Based ( like Yahoo or Black Planet)
- POP, Outlook,
- Mailing Lists and Newsgroups,
- Text Messaging (I believe the telephone and computer will merge in the
next 5 years),
- Instant Messaging,
- Chat and
- Virtual Meetings
Since most folk use either Web Based email or POP3
discussion, use this opportunity to learn about the other type..
Pay particular attention to:
- the @Issue "Spam" on page 179, this is very important
because the SPAM problem is getting worse and is causing email to become a
less effective tool.
- the @Issue "E-Mail Viruses" on page 202,;his is very important because
along with SPAM, viruses are causing email to become a less effective
tool.
- the @Issue "Internet Addiction" on page 233
Email systems lays out the advantages of email. Think about them,
can you think of others? Can you think of some disadvantages?
Discuss on the WebBoard.
Note the components on an email address. The @ is always required
and is the clue it is an email address. Web site addresses never have
an @.
If you use a POP client such as Outlook or Outlook Express (they
are different) or Eudora then simply skim the "Using Outlook Express"
section, 179 to 202 looking for things with which you may not be familiar.
If you use a Web based email client such as Yahoo or Black
Planet) then simply skim the "Using Web Base E-Mail Services" section, 203
to 202 looking for things with which you may not be familiar.
But note that whether you use POP or Web based you need to be able to
utilize the functions that email provides:
- Send and Receive Messages (the difference between POP and IMAP) is the
messages in POP are transferred to your computer and with IMAP both InBox
and Sent messages are stored on the email server.
- Attach files, and Open Attachments.
Remember that the receiver must have the software required to read the
attachment; for example Excel for a spreadsheet. Or the same word
processing program as was used to crease a document. However, if you
save it at .rtf, which is a terrific idea because every word processor
program should be able to read it and so far there are no viruses
associated with rtf.
- Print the Message
- Use folders: Create them and move a message to a folder
- Delete messages. Remember that messages are never totally gone;
there is always a backup and law courts (and others) can find any email
that you have ever written.
LISTSERVs and Newsgroups as described in the text still around but
BLOGs and other WWW services such as Yahoo groups are taking their place.
The text used Yahoo groups as an example Web Based discussion groups.
This cource used WebBoard because the college pays for it so there is no
advertising. Other online courses use the Discussion board that comes
with WebCT.
Three types of Real-Time or Synchronous communication are discussed:
Chat, Instant Message and Virtual Meeting. Note that text messaging
can be access from IM.
Once you've read the chapter,
complete the following the check yourself that you "got it":
- Make sure you understand the terms on page 236. If not, go to the page
given in parenthesis () and reread these terms that are in bolded
text.
That means more than just being able to select the correct choice in a
multiple choice question.
If you don't feel comfortable with one or more terms check them out with:
- Test your knowledge
-
Do NOT do the True or False on 237
-
Do, but do not submit, the Multiple Choice on
Page 237 & 238
-
In the Learn It Online section of scsite.com/internet/ch4 do one of the
follow (see page 239 for more description)
- Practice Test (it tells you what the correct answers
should be, but you have to take the whole test first.)
-
Flash Cards (you can choose how many cards you want - and
at the end the ones you missed will be listed)
- Who Wants to Be a Computer Genius? (this is fun but you are
stopped as soon as you miss a question)
- Crossword Puzzle Challenge (crossword puzzles are a
favorite of my by it doesn't tell you if you got it correct or not).
