Procedure:

You can visit one or two computer stores. 

You can visit a Software store such as:

bullet Babbage's in the Short Hills Mall
bulletCheck Superpages for one near you

Visit a computer hardware store such as

bulletCompUSA
bulletPC Warehouse
bulletCircuit City
bulletBeach Camera... 

Stores such as Office Max and Staples DO NOT QUALIFY as computer stores because salesfolk there sell chairs, paper and do not get special training in computers.  If in doubt, ASK first if the store you are considering is a REAL Computer Hardware store.

Either way, spend at least one hour there. It is best during "dead times" like 10 to 11:30am or 2 to 4:30pm.  Saturday tends to be busy.  Lunch hour is busy.

Be sure to actually USE the hardware and/or software (two or more different ones for a top grade.)  Ask for brochures.  Pretend you are going to purchase a computer (after all someday you will, and if you are impressed with the store from this first visit, there is a high probability you will return.)

When at a Software store, pick up the packages and read the backs carefully to see what each package does. 

Write a one page summary describing what happened. Be SPECIFIC.

bullet Did you go alone or with someone?
bullet What time/day did you visit?  Was the store busy?  What types of folk were there?
bullet Did they have a big selection?  What hardware did you see?  What software did you see?? 
bullet Did you look at he supplies like CD's, floppies etc?
bullet What did your learn?
bullet What products did you look at carefully?
bullet What was the salesperson "pushing"?
bullet Did you use any of the PC's?
bulletWould you return?  Would you buy there?  If so, why?  If not, why?
bulletShow off your knowledge of word processing techniques
bulletused varied typefaces and font sizes
bulletsprinkle in font styles like outline.
bulletbold, italicize and underline some text
bulletuse some different paragraph indents
bulletadd some borders and shading
bulletinsert a footnote  or two
bulletadd some clip art and a page borders
