Each student should sign up for and setup a Yahoo briefcase by the second week of class.

All assignments are to be submitted by Uploading the file to the Yahoo Briefcase and sending the prof an email that it is there.

bulletsend a separate email from your regular email program.  Do not use Yahoo Briefcase to send the email.
bulletemail the prof when you have put something new in your briefcase to look at
otherwise there is no way to know that you have added a file
bulletif Yahoo is NOT your email provider, put your Yahoo id in the subject.
bulletsend ONE email per item to be graded

This page tells how to

  1. Setup Yahoo Briefcase you must sign up with Yahoo.
  2. Upload a file (send a copy of a Word, Excel, PowerPoint or other file from your computer to cyberspace)

  3. Download a file so that it can be modified (bring a copy from cyberspace to the local computer.
Access databases and thus mail merge pairs MUST be downloaded).
The local computer must have the proper software. For example a PowerPoint (.ppt) file is downloaded, PowerPoint must be installed on the computer.

  4. Download a file for viewing only (look at it cyberspace using your Internet browser, but NOT modify it)

To Upload a file - take a copy of it from the local computer and put it onto the Virtual Hard Disk located in cyberspace.

Save the file locally. Be sure to give it a good descriptive name At home that would be in My Documents or a folder under My Documents;
at UCC that would be on your "M" drive, which has your S0xxxx name.

bullet

Open an Internet window and go to http://briefcase.yahoo.com/your-yahoo-id (sign on to Yahoo and get an id if need be).

bullet

The Yahoo briefcase displays available folders (see folder under Type) and importantly how many items (files) are in the folder and when a file in the folder was Last Modified.

bullet

Select the correct folder by clicking on its name.

bullet

Yahoo lets you upload several files.

Good file name are critical: Select a name for your file when you save it on your local computer that will be useful in cyberspace too

bullet

You should NOT need to enter a different name on the second line.

bullet

Describe the content like KiddyBook, MailMergeLetter, Mail MergeData.

bullet

Avoid spaces

bullet

Do NOT put the type of like like spreadsheet in the name since the extension
These( (xls for spreadsheet, ppt for PowerPoint, doc of MS, mdb.for Access database) are automatic supplied)

If an older version of the file is already in your briefcase, Yahoo will rename the new file by adding a  -1.  For example if MagazineReview.doc is already in the Yahoo briefcase folder, the newly uploaded file will be called MagazineReview--1.doc.  Since Yahoo sorts by Date Last Modified, it is good to keep older version in cyberspace, for backup, if for nothing else.

You specify the file to be uploaded the same way you would for an email attachment: Click  (Browse) to view files your hard drive.
Navigate to the proper directory on your drive, and click on the file you wish to Upload.
If you named your file properly when you saved it locally, then you should leave the box next to Name: blank
If you have weird characters or want to change the name type a new name here
but remember to put the .doc for Word, .ppt for PowerPoint, .xls for Excel, mdb for Access, etc.!

bullet

Finally click Upload button at the bottom of the screen.

bullet

Yahoo displays the files now in the folder.
Optionally add a comment to each file by clicking on the pencil Edit to the right of the file name and below the word Edit
Edit enables renaming the file also. (note Yahoo will never change the 3 character type)

Emailing folk (the prof) to tell them to view the files

No one knows you have uploaded the files until you tell them so you MUST email anyone who is a Friend to notify them that files are now available for viewing.
Use you normal email program so you can leave instructions as to what you have made available and why.

Do NOT use Yahoo briefcase to send email.  It does not put CIS100-sec nor the assignment name in the subject.
It puts your Yahoo id, not your real name, in the "From", so I do not even know who it is from!

  1.  use Yahoo  briefcase to upload the file(s)
  2. use your regular email program to create proper subject that includes your yahoo id and the fact you wish me to look at certain file(s)
