Objective:

To transform the E-R Model to Access Relationships
To create an Normalized Relations understanding the importance of the primary key. 
By studying and critiquing the models of classmates to see errors that can occur in database relationships that are not normalized and how they are corrected.  
To understand the critical importance of having a correct model before proceeding.  
To practice ways to ensure validity of the model.

Assignment:

bulletUsing MS Access to create relationships for your database that implement your E-R model and Business Rules.
bulletUpload your MDB and  post a short description of what you did (what others should look at) on the Bulletin Board.
bulletRead the summary posts of others, download their databases and critique the relationships of teammates and other class members.
bulletRespond to your critiques.

bulletread about them in an Access book
bulletuse online MS Access help.  Enter "Relationships" in the Help wizard and follow the links to "Create or modify relationships" and "Work with relationships"
bulletSelect primary keys for all your tables
bulletMake relationships that correspond to your E-R Model
bulletBe sure to go from the 1 to the Many side of the relation and Ensure Referential Integrity
bullet

Compact and upload it to your directory on the virtual drive and post description of what you did on the Bulletin Board.

Look at other students posts and study the Relationships

bullet

Critique team member and others as replies to their post.

bullet

Study your Critiques

Improve your diagram as needed

Procedure:

  1. Read Chapter 5 "Normalization of Database Tables."
  2. Study your tables.  Make sure they are all in third Normal Form
  3. Compact and upload your MDB to your directory on the virtual drive  
  4. Post a message on the Bulletin Board that your work is ready to be reviewed.
  5. Submit for assignment for feedback from proof and first draft grade
  6. Check if your teammates or other class members have posted a Forms is on their Database
    bulletIf so download the MDB
    bulletView the relationship by clicking on the Relationship button.  This will cause the relationships to show such as
    bulletInspect each relationship by pointing to a line and right clicking so you can Edit it
    bulletCheck the designs including keys of each table by pointing to it and right clicking and choosing "Table Design"
    bulletPost suggestions on the Bulletin Board
    bulletImitate good ideas in your database tables, keys and relations
  7. Look for suggestions to your keys and relationships
    bulletincorporate suggestions into your design and upload to your directory on the virtual drive again then note improvement  on Bulletin Board as a reply to your original post in the Relationship topic or
    bulletpost reasons why you think suggestions won't work
  8. Iterate on steps 6 an 7 above (Help classmates, Revise your database)
