Working Papers are optional.

          A shrink wrapped package of the text, working papers, and My Accounting Lab Access Code can only be purchased from the Union County College Cranford Bookstore (908)709-7619.  These can be mailed by purchasing by phone with a major credit card.         

          Items can be purchased separately. The My Accounting Lab Access Code can be purchased on the Internet but is optional. 

CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

Theory of debit and credit, the purpose and use of a balance sheet, income statement, controlling accounting accounts, subsidiary ledgers and special journals.  Description of negotiable instruments, worksheets, depreciation methods, accounting for accruals and deferrals, and accounting for inventories.  Financial Accounting Theory.  Equivalent course may be substituted.  See departmental chairperson.

OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the course, the student will be able to:  

1.  Understand accounting principles and practices for proprietorships. 

2.  Introduce and illustrate the double-entry accounting   method of recording transactions and the accounting cycle for service and merchandising businesses. 

3.  Describe and illustrate the basic procedures for adjusting, summarizing, and closing the accounting records and the preparation of the financial statements. 

4.  Develop accounting and business terminology. 

5.  Become more computer literate than before taking this course. 

6.  Access information from the Internet. 

7.  Understand that accounting standards and principles in the United States are not necessarily the same in other countries.

8.  Demonstrate the ability to use the Internet for research purposes and to write coherent and readable paragraphs. 

GRADING: 

Final Grading - 90-100, A; 87-89, B+; 80-86, B; 77-79, C+; 70-76, C; 67-69, D+; 60-66, D; Below 60, F. 

Your final grade will be determined as follows:

Proctored Tests 10%
On-line Tests 40%
On-line Class Discussion 30%
Chapter Problems 10%
Internet Exercises 10%
Total 100%

There will be two proctored exams given. These can be taken on the UCC Cranford Campus on a scheduled date or, by arrangements with the professor, on another date in the Assessment Center. If the student cannot come to the UCC Cranford Campus, arrangements can be made to forward the tests to a proctor arranged for by the student and agreed on by the professor at another location.  Most colleges have a testing center.  These should be used if possible.  

POLICIES AND ASSIGNMENTS

1.          You are expected to complete the reading assignment in the text.

2.          Lecture notes should be read and readiness assessment quizzes and quizzes to test your understanding should be completed.  These can be found on WebCT, PHReenforcer (program on CD-ROM), and the Companion Website accessed from WebCT.

3.   Answer questions in the Discussion Area.  Be sure to react to one other student's reply.  These will count 30% of your grade.

4.          The "Lecture homework assignments" in WebCT for each assigned  chapter are to be completed for your information.   Answers will be provided.  Specific problems assigned by the professor are found by clicking Assignments and Testing Information on the Home Page of WebCT.   They can be completed electronically through the use of the Electronic Working Papers, Excel Spreadsheets, a Word document, or a General Ledger Program and be forwarded to the professor as attachments or a copy and paste to the E-mail provided in the WebCT. They can also be completed using the working papers and can be faxed, scanned and attached to an email, hand delivered, or mailed. Late assignments will be penalized and may not be accepted.  

5.          Internet exercises are to be completed and sent to the professor as attachments to the email in WebCT.  These will count 10% of your final grade.

6.          An on-line chapter test should be taken during the semester.  The Calendar has suggested dates for completion. Documentation of a disability will be required for any student needing more time than given.

7.          Students are encouraged to ask questions on any matters that are not clear to them.

8.          You are expected to participate in group activities using   the discussion, chat rooms, e-mail, instant messaging,  or whatever means of communication is required between you, your professor, and your classmates.
