GUIDELINES FOR @HOME CHEM 106 LABS
Read all lab experiments completely from
start to finish before beginning work.Email, call or fax me your lab questions at any time
(remember, your lab time is flexible; an experiment does NOT have to be completed all at
once, particularly if you are not sure of what it is you are to do!)
Create a safe work environment. |
 | Have all safety equipment as listed in the regulations, readily available in your @home work
space |
 | Wear your goggles from the start to the finish of all experiments |
 | Work from a clean, cleared table top |
 | Work independently but not alone |
 | Friends or family members should be available to assist you in case
of emergencies. |
 | Do all experimental work yourself. |
 | Others may observe if they are wearing goggles
and remain 6 -10 feet away from the work area. |
 | Wash your hands after you have finished the experiment |
Directions for heating a chemical sample:
A water bath is used for indirect heating. Half fill a
small saucepan with tap water then place your chemical sample in a 250 or 400 ml. beaker.
Be sure that the water level in the saucepan only comes to about halfway up the height of
the beaker.
Carefully, place the beaker and its contents in the saucepan.
Turn on the stovetop to low heat.
Do NOT walk away from your sample while it is heating.
The heating process must be monitored carefully at all times.
After heating is complete, allow the beaker to cool before removing it from the saucepan.
Place all hot items on the porcelain square.
BEWARE OF FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS!!
NO flames should be in the room when using flammable liquids
such as:
 | ALCOHOLS: rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
or
drinking alcohol (ethanol) |
 | ACETONE: nail polish remover |
At the end of the experiment return all materials to
the kit, clean.
All kits must be returned to N-13 BEFORE lab final
exams are administered.
Students who fail to return kits will receive a zero grade on the lab final exam.
