“Media Alternatives for Teaching Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory”
Tuesday  March 7, 2004     4:15 - 5:15 PM

     This presentation will provide various examples of media created for laboratory safety instruction. The faculty member will describe the methods used to create instructional content and an online course specialist will describe the process of digitizing video. Media options discussed will include standard video, CD ROM, DVD, streaming video, and web mounted PowerPoint. The advantages and disadvantages of each format for on campus as well as distant students will be discussed.

Identify video source: It may be  from a DVD, CD, Video tape, Video camera etc.

Capture: Use a capture board to convert analog video to digital format. Alternatively  a firewire port may be used to obtain a digital media file directly from a DV camera.

Encode:  Encode your video into a digital format like MPEG, QuickTime, Real etc.

Distribute:  The digitized video can then be uploaded to media server for streaming. Other distribution methods may include CD/DVD.

Test: Make sure the digital video is accessible from various platforms.
