OVERCOMING
HATRED
Creating Community
Minutes Meeting Oct 4, 2007
Elizabeth

- We were able to have our first OH/CC meeting on Thursday-October 4 on
the Elizabeth campus.
Attending the meeting were Elissa Austria, Arlene Marcus, Eileen Kauffman,
Will Van Dorp, Jose Romero, Dr. Ralph Ford and myself. We appreciate the
fact that many of you expressed interest in attending the meeting however
were unable to come due to previous commitments.
The committee decided to break up the OH/CC offerings throughout the Fall
2007 and Spring 2008 semesters, as opposed to cramming everything in during
one week. This way, we are able to catch our breath in between offerings and
the various events will not compete with each other on the various campuses.
November 2007 as well as February, March and April 2008 are possible
targeted months.
The overall theme of “Growing up in War and Poverty” was selected.
It should be noted that every event does not have to follow this theme.
We chose this theme because of the recent events reported in the news, the
experiences of some of our current and former ESL students as well as the
current college novel A Long Way Gone.

We have a few events in the works such as………….
- A panel discussion with both current and former ESL students on their
experiences in the various countries (Sierra Leone, Darfur, etc). It was
felt that the students might not feel comfortable giving an official lecture
so perhaps a Q & A or panel discussion prompted by a moderator might be
better for them to speak in front of an audience
- Joanna Breitstein from i.Hug (The International Help Uganda Grow
Foundation)
http://www.ihugfoundation.org and how one woman made a difference
- A special project working with artist Victor Davson who will be
exhibiting his work at the Tomasulo Art Gallery in the spring
http://www.ucc.edu/Top/Community+and+Business/TomasuloArt/default.htm
- A student poetry/art/essay competition in the spring
- Any suggestions and ideas are always welcomed.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday- November 1, 2007 @ 2:00 PM on
the Elizabeth Campus.
In the future, we will attempt to schedule a meeting on the Cranford campus
as well.
