Minutes of PDC Meeting of October 10, 2005 2pm Cranford S112 in attendance:

Maureen told everyone to look at the PDC website, http://faculty.ucc.edu/committee-pdc,  because she has added things like upcoming teleconferences, faculty teaching tips, Stan's idea to have a pop quiz when the class is disturbed by a cell phone.   She invited PDC members and all faculty to submit short descriptions of teaching ideas that work.

We discussed the day for the 2006 Teaching and technology conference.  Maria had a list of the responses to her memo to the faculty (include here)

Most of the folk who has responded to her email to the faculty preferred Friday over Saturday.  I passed on Paula Belonte's idea that we should do it after the snow season, in late march or early April.   We checked the calendar to avoid Easter and Passover and decided on March 31st. with a schedule of

  • noon lunch
  • 12:30 to 1;20 speaker
  • 1:0 1st session
  • 2:30 coffee/soda break
  • 2:45 2nd session
  • 3:45 conference over, people turn in evaluations and get a goodie bag

We felt that since there were 60 people in 2005 and perhaps there would be more in 2006 since it will be a Friday, better weather and adjunct faculty invited, 5 workshops in each of the 2 sessions would be good.   Ideas for workshops were :

Already emailed to Maria:

  • Bohdan – TurnItIn
  • Vince Wrice – using technology in student assessment, calculating grades, scheduling and attendance
  • Donna Weir – Teaching an online course
  • Helena Holmes, teaching students how to find and evaluated websites for research

Ideas:

  • CPR presented by the EMT staff in Plainfield, even though it is a lot of work for them to bring the material to Cranford, it was so well received last time we will really try to offer it again
  • Ergonomics in the workplace was a session Plainfield put on in Plainfield this all and perhaps they will repeat it for the T&T
  • Webboard – how to set it up and use it (Pat Ishill uses it, Barbara McGoldrick and Susannah Chewning have given talks on WebBoard in the past
  • WebCT for beginners and a round table for people currently using it to trade knowledge (MLG will arrange)
  • MLG will contact Carl Cuttita and Joanne Gouveia if they would like to present

Not discussed, but I just thought of it, we can ask media if they can do a session

     More ideas:

  • Pat Biddar could do a session on how the statistics she has available could help us improve teaching
  • Patricia Castaldi could discuss Middle States Review preparation
  • The library staff should be invited to discuss databases available from the library
  • Toby Marx and Cyndi Roemer might want to do a session on the new Women's Studies program and innovative teaching methods used
  •  Gail Hein could provide a session on the ALC
  •  Alan November could be a possible keynoter.  I requested that the library order his book. http://www.novemberlearning.com/Default.aspx?tabid=30

We all should ask around for ideas for keynoter and workshop presenters.

The next meeting will be Wednesday November 16th at 1:30 when we are on Cranford for the faculty meeting at 3:00
