Wednesday September 13, 2006  2:00-3:00pm Cranford Library

Agenda:

  • elect chairperson(s)

  • set schedule for future meetings

  • discuss possible workshops

  • begin to plan PDC Teaching & Technology Conference?

Attendees:

Chairs:

Maureen and Maria accepted a share chair for 2006/7

Attendance

Since so few members attended this committee meeting and several, who where on the committee last year never made a meeting, we decided we would reach out to these members and ask them to come to meetings if possible, and if not, to communicate with the rest of the committee their idea via email.

Workshops:

Workshops publicized on the PDC site are now open to

  • full time faculty

  • adjuncts (Joann needs to get approval

  • contusing education faculty

  • administration

  • support staff

We need to get the faculty more involved particularly for suggesting topics for workshops both during the year and for the T&T conference.  If faculty provide the content, Joan will arrange the room and coffee and cookies.

2007 Technology and teaching Conference

We again need to arrange for a keynote speaker.  There is $2,500 in the budget, so if $1,500 is used to play the workshop presenters, that leaves $1,000 for the keynoter.  We should be able to get a pretty prestigious speaker.  Question remains Friday or Saturday and the exact date.  Maria suggested that we try holding the conference in Elizabeth since it would be easier to get a large lecture room for the keynoter.  Joann said said attendance at Elizabeth Workshops is below Cranford.  Given that Palm Sunday is April 1 so Easter is April 8,  reasonable dates in late March (to avoid snow cancellation etc) are Friday: March 23 or Saturday March 24.  Joann suggested that we include roundtables on topics such as

Roundtables

These are ideas suggested at the meeting at via emails right after:

  • The Counseling Model at UCC

  • Forming a Closer Relationship with Area High Schools.

  • The No Child Left Behind Trickle Up Effect – is the standardization of higher education inevitable?  Is that good or bad?

  • Do We Teach the Basic Skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking, etc.) in All Our Classes?

  • The Do's and Don'ts of Teaching Online Classes.

  • An organized Peer-Mentoring Program for New Faculty (full- and part-time). Do We Need One?

  • Strategies for Belt-Tightening at the College.

  • Retention: Sharing What We Know.

  • Critical Thinking Skills: What Are They and Are We Developing Them?

  • Dealing with a difficult student: strategies for success.

  • Customer Service: How Can We Improve Ours?

  • Adjuncts and Full-Timers: Can We Talk?

  • Students who Work 40 Hours a Week and take 4-5 Classes.... Is That an Issue We Need to Discuss?
