Overview and Objectives

Participants will discover the amazing student learning potential through the integration of real time data other Internet resources in the classroom.  Using such Internet resources instead of information out of a textbook not only engages students, but also brings a real world connection right into the classroom.  The projects and resources reviewed during the session include a multidisciplinary approach to teaching.

During the session, participants will be given an overview of the projects and then asked to participate in abbreviated versions of the lessons contained within a curriculum to allow for understanding as to how the Internet resources can be used in the classroom.

Supporting Research

Independent evaluations by Harcourt Educational Measurement show impact on student achievement. In a study of selected classrooms using Internet resources, 86% of students showed noteworthy gains on the science and mathematics learning objectives. Teachers reported spending less time lecturing; being more comfortable with small group activities; using more cooperative learning techniques; feeling better prepared to teach for different learning styles; being better teachers of problem-solving; and feeling more competent at presenting complex materials (Yepes-Baraya, 2001).
