The Web is We:  Can Blogs and Wikis, Social Networks and Open Source, Podcasts and RSS Revolutionize Higher Ed?

In the past five years, the web has witnessed a seismic shift in its use. This shift, sometimes called Web 2.0, is characterized by an architecture of participation and applications that emphasize collaboration, social networking, and shared ownership of content.

Many of us are familiar with the next generation of online resources but have yet to ask how these tools might shape our teaching and learning. How can educators integrate wikis and blogs into their committee work and their classrooms? How might students apply social networking skills into their hybrid or fully online distance education classes?

Most importantly: Why would faculty, staff, and students want to embrace the notion that “the web is we”? This presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of the web and explore how and why educators might integrate various Web 2.0 applications into their professional lives.
10:30-11:20
  1. Wikis: Cynthia Villani
The Web is We: Weaving Your Own Web—A Workshop in Creating Wikis and Blogs
In this workshop, participants will create a collective wiki as well as a blog. After learning how to create these collaborative tools, we’ll use our new webspace to generate ideas for pedagogical applications, discuss benefits and drawbacks of each, and explore their connections to distance education

  2. Faculty Webpage Part 1 of 2:Vince Tanzi
Planning and creating a web site using FrontPage. Topics will include using templates to create your web as well as formatting and publishing your site

  3. Grant writing for Faculty and Staff: Lisa Ebert
How to find funding for your projects. Grant Research and Writing tips.

  5. Blended Teaching and Learning: Chris Grzesik
Learn about the use of face-to-face and at-a-distance teaching within one course, which allows flexibility in course delivery to meet pedagogical needs.  Hear a brief overview of blended teaching and learning, touching on modes and tools currently available, and what we might expect in the future.
11:35-12:20
  1. Critical thinking skills and the web: Debby Kemp-Jackson & Mahua De
Technology is increasingly becoming an important element in the language classroom . Our students, too, appear very comfortable using different aspects of technology like the PowerPoint, the Internet, and so on. Yet, this ease of use does not translate to appropriate use nor does it indicate the use of critical thinking skills. In this workshop, we will discuss some activities that will help our students to use the Internet more effectively
  2. Faculty Webpage Part 2 of 2: Vince Tanzi
Planning and creating a web site using FrontPage. Topics will include using templates to create your web as well as formatting and publishing your site.
Participants from Creating a Frontpage Web Site I can continue to work on their web site.
  3. Making your PowerPoint Presentations Memorable: Maureen Greenbaum
They’re fun to watch so they involve students in the learning! Learn about choosing animated clip art and drawing caption bubbles. Make the most of page transitions and object animation. Learn to use unknown themes from the web. Link to web sites and make a little noise. Create a web version that can be viewed without PowerPoint.
  4. Customizing Outlook Mail II: Wendy Pate
Learn how to work with Outlook Contacts - add and delete contacts, create groups, insert contact cards into e-mails to send to another person, and create new categories. Learn how to use Outlook calendar to organize you appointments and generate alarms to remind you before an appointment.
