Scavenger Hunt
What is your WebCT ID? What is
your password? How do you log in? If you do not have this
information written down - write it down NOW so you will be able to log in
when you get home and the next time you come to class. Where are you
planning to keep this info you can bring it to class?
Where is the course calendar located?
Open it and read it. Will there be changes made to the calendar? If
changes are made, how will you know what they are? What should you do if I
forget to update NEWS?
What do you have to do to prepare for
class on Thursday, January 24?
What is due?
What will be returned?
What do you need to bring to class to get credit for class participation?
What will you do in class on January 29?
What is due in class on January 31? What is your homework for January 31?
Do you have a flash drive? If not,
you can buy one at the Kean University bookstore, at Best Buy and at Circuit
City. If you can suggest a cheaper - better - place to get a flash drive, send
me an email and I will post it on NEWS.
Will you need to bring any documents to
class on Tuesday January 29? What are you going to do with those documents at
home? How will you use them in class on Tuesday? Where can you find
these documents? How do you print them? Can you print them here, in
class?
How many different numbered headings are
listed at Handouts? (What are they? Why do you think Handouts is organized
this way? Are all the documents available for you online? If I
forget to post an assignment sheet that you need for an assignment due for the
next class - what will you do?
NOTE: Files stored on computers are
created by many different programs. The letters after the period in a
document's name tell you the program that created the file. For your computer to
open a file, it must access a program that can read or create the file.
Some of the documents at Handouts are.PDFs (Photo Document Files). To open
.PDFs you need to have Adobe Reader.
What kind of document is the assignment
you need to print for Tuesday (what is the file extension)?
Do you have Acrobat Reader on your home
computer? If you do not, where can you get a free copy of Acrobat Reader?
(Hint: Check the NEWs page). If you don't know how to download
programs, how can you find out?
Read the note about Files created in
programs other than MSword at NEWS. What word processing program do you have on
your computer? If you have a Macintosh computer, or if you use MSworks,
Openoffice, MSWord07, or a word processing program other than MS word on your
home computer, what will you have to do to turn in your assignments? How many
times can you "forget" to send your work as an .rtf before you lose credit for
your work?
Does your computer at home have an
internet connection? Is it fast enough to open WebCT without making you so
frustrated that you will give up? If you do not have a good connection at
home, where can you go to do your assignments? If you are not going to be
able to access WebCT from home, and if you do not have a realistic option for
getting to a computer where you can do your homework - put up your hand so we
can talk about how to set you up to pass this course.
We went through the course syllabus during
the first half of class - but there is a copy here on WebCT in case you lose
yours. Where is the course syllabus located? Open it and scan through it
one more time. Do you have any questions about the policies listed there?
State, in your own words, what you think are the three most important policies
on your syllabus. Are you worried about any of these policies?
WebCT allows you to turn in work
whether or not you are in class.
In general, when are assignments due?
Are assignments ever due on days when you don't have class? Give an
example.
If you are going to be absent from class, will your assignment receive a
zero if you turn it in late?
List two things you can do to keep from receiving a zero for an assignment
due on a day when you will be absent.
Where can you find copies of the criteria
for your writing assignments? What kind of information can you find on
assignment sheets? (Hint: Open up several assignment sheets and check it out).
Because material for this course is
written for EVERYONE - some of it will go too slow and be too easy and some of
it will be go too fast and be too hard.
What are you going to do if the
material is too easy for you?
What will you do if it is too hard? (Hint: look at the calendar and
consider the different kinds of assignments).
How can WebCT help you get what you need out of this course - even if it is
a little below or a little above the level of training you bring to the
course?
What happens if you are going to miss
class? Are there excused absences for this course? Can you turn your
work in late if you miss class? Do you need to tell me ahead of time? Can
you make up in-class work that you miss due to absences? What
happens if you miss three classes?
Where can you find the University's policy
on plagiarism? Go to the site and answer the following questions: What is
the consequence for including even a section of a sentence, word for word, from
an internet source or someone else's work in your writing without the use of
quotation marks and giving credit to the source? What happens if you
plagiarize more than once?
How many points will you lose on a writing
assignment if you turn your work in late?
How do you think you are supposed to turn
in this scavenger hunt? That's right! Make sure to send it as
an attachment. After you send the email with your Scavenger hunt attached,
go to your outbox to make sure it went through (make sure the email has the
paperclip beside it to indicate the attachment went with it). How many
times can you forget to attach your assignments before you lose credit?
TURN IN YOUR SCAVENGER HUNT.
In the email with the attachment, write me a paragraph to let me know how you
are doing.
Tell me:
* What you liked about this
class and what you didn't like.
* If the technology was hard for you, or if you think it is going to be OK
* Anything I might need to know so I can provide you with the support for your
writing that you will need
* If you have any suggestions for
this course, write those as well.
Your thoughtful participation and
contributions are what will make this class work. I will do my best, but
the teacher can only do so much. Thanks in advance for your help!!!
