2008-2009 End of Year Report

The Scholarship committee met several times over the academic year. During our meetings and even on our own time we reviewed applications and awarded scholarships. The committee also continued to revise the scholarship application procedures and process to make it more accessible to students. However, for the committee to continue to do its work effectively there must be increased and continuous  communication between the UCC Foundation (UCCF), Financial Aid, and the Committee. Just this past semester new scholarships became available, but the Committee was not informed of these until the Scholarship reception. Furthermore, the Committee must work hand in hand with the Financial Aid department in order to award scholarships and to be sure that awards are based on the criteria set forth by the Sponsors (for endowed scholarships).  We are also attempting to get rid of the deadline for applications to make the process more accessible to students, but in so doing we have created a "trickle" effect. In other words, at different times during the semester so few applications were received that calling together the full committee would have been ineffective. This means that the Committee may have to revise the way it completes its work as set forth in the by-laws. The Committee will continue to review applications after the Spring and Fall semesters to award scholarships, but Committee members should be willing (as they were over the past academic year) to be called on by the Financial Aid department to review applications that trickle in, so students can be awarded scholarships on a more timely manner.  This work will be carried on by the new chair of the committee Professor Mahua De who was elected by committee in April, 2009.
