Encyclopedia
Encyclopedia Americana,
International Edition (1998), s.v. “Ataturk, Mustafa Kemal.”

Republic. His early military career, how he established the republic in
Turkey, and his reforms are also mentioned in this encyclopedia.
Books
Kinross, Lord. Ataturk: A Biography of Mustafa Kemal, Father of Modern
Turkey, 2nd
Ed. New York: William Morrow and Company, 1965.
This a biography of Ataturk,
who is the father of Modern Turkey. The book starts with his birth,
education as an officer, and service in the field. He served in the Tripolitanian
War, The Balkan Wars, and The First World War. World War I brought Ottoman Empire to
the end. The Turkish war of independence started in May 19, 1919 under
the leadership of Ataturk. In 1923, Turkey proclaimed its independence,
and Ataturk became the first president of the new republic.
Mango, Andrew. Ataturk: The Biography of the Founder of Modern Turkey.
Woodstock, New York: The Overlook Press, 1999.
This book is another
biography of Ataturk. I focused on two different periods of time between
these two books. I focused mainly on the background of the republic and
how it was proclaimed in Turkey in my first annotation. I concentrated
what happened after the proclamation of the republic in Turkey in this
book. Several series of reforms followed the proclamation of
republic. These reforms were the Abolition of the Caliphate in 1924, Revolution in Headgear in
1925, Emancipation of Woman in 1926, and Reform of the Alphabet in 1928.

Turkish people used to
write in Arabic but speak in Turkish. After the proclamation of republic
in Turkey, one of the remarkable reform was Latinizing the Turkish
Alphabet in 1928. By the opening of the national schools in 1929, the
new alphabet started to spread throughout of the whole nation.
