General Education
Requirements

The International Studies Program is an option within the Liberal Arts Curriculum of Union County College.  At the end of the program, an Associate in Arts degree (AA) degree is awarded.  All AA degree programs throughout the State of New Jersey require at least 45 general education credits.  These general education credits must be distributed according to six categories.  The distribution requirements and the particular courses within each of these general education distribution requirements are outlined below.

Communications (Minimum requirement:  9 credits)

                          ENG 101; ENG 102;  ENG 128

                                    9 Communications Credits

Mathematics/Science/Technology (Minimum requirement:  12 credits)

            Mathematics (Minimum requirement:  3 – 8 credits)—Algebra, Statistics, Calculus

                        MAT 119 or CIS 100 (check entry under computer science)
                                or higher level mathematics course—3 or 4 credits

                                    (If these are 3-credit courses, the you must also take CIS 110, which is a
                                    1-credit course
)

                        MAT  127 or  higher level Statistics course—4 credits (this course
                                    requires previous college level mathematics (MAT 117 or
                                       MAT 119 or higher) and it  is also a requirement for your major.)

            Science (Minimum requirement:  3 – 8 credits—at least one laboratory course)

                        Any laboratory science course in the Earth Science, Ecology and Environment Category
                        of the Lab Science General Education Category  (For example: CHE 106; or BIO 208; or AST 101;
                        OR AST 102; or GEY 101; or GEY 102) —4 credits

            Computer Science or Technical Literacy (Minimum requirement:  0 – 4 credits)

                        No credits are required.

                        CIS 100 meets your general education
                                 requirements for Mathematics/Science/Technology; but it does not
                                 meet the prerequisites for MAT 127, which is a course required in
                                 your major.  If you select CIS 100, you may have to
                                  take additional mathematics courses to meet the prerequisites.
                          If you need the extra one credit in the Mathematics/Science/Technology General Education category,
                                ADM 101, a 2-credit keyboarding course, is a good choice/
                                Any other credit level CIS course will also do.
                          In order to make any substitution, you need a "Course Waiver and Substitution" form signed by the
                                International Studies Coordinator and the Program Chairperson  .
