GENERAL INFORMATION

For general information about office hours, grading policies, attendance, deportment, and college policies see the General Information Page.   That page constitutes part of this syllabus.  Please read it.

INFORMATION LITERACY

All students at Union County College are expected to become "information literate" before they graduate and all college-credit courses are expected to have an information literacy component.

Most Sophomore-level (200-level) courses have traditionally had a term paper requirement, which, through the research required, meets the information literacy requirement.  This course, GOV 207, requires a term paper based on your own research.  You may want to look at my Web pages on Information Literacy for additional information on how to do research and do bibliographies in the appropriate format.

TERM PAPER INFORMATION

TERM PAPER: This course requires a research paper, 13 - 19 pages in length, typed with footnotes and a bibliography using the Turabian format. Click on the link to see more information.  Please submit TWO typed copies of the paper, the original and a photocopy or electronic copy. The original will be returned with comments; the copy will be retained by the instructor. If only one copy of your paper is received, it will be graded but not returned. An electronic copy alone is not acceptable.  You must submit a paper copy that I can read, mark up, and grade.

TERM PAPER TOPICS:    This Semester, each student will select one of the case
studies on war described in the Stoessinger book, Why Nations Go to War.

PAPER OUTLINE AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY DUE DATE: After initial approval, a short one to two page OUTLINE, typed, and a short FIVE-ITEM ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY,  using the Chicago Manual or Turabian Format,  must be submitted by Wednesday, September 23.  The Annotated Bibliography must contain one Encyclopedia entry, two book entries, and two scholarly article entries.  Follow the format described in this link.

TERM PAPER DUE DATE: Wednesday, December 3

PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a deadly sin and will lead you straight to hell. It is defined in the Student Handbook. It can easily be avoided by using quotation marks or paraphrasing AND then footnoting (giving credit) to the source of the information. Please guard against this kind of cheating.
