Please submit TWO typed copies, the original and a copy. The original will be returned with comments; the copy will be retained by the instructor. If only one copy of your paper is received, it will be graded but not returned. You are also asked to send a copy of your term paper electronically to me at damerow@ucc.edu. This will not be returned or corrected online. TERM PAPER TOPIC: SELECTION OF TOPIC WILL BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS. All topics MUST BE APPROVED IN ADVANCE by the instructor. PAPER OUTLINE DUE DATE: After initial approval, a short one to two page OUTLINE, typed, and a short BIBLIOGRAPHY (at least five entries), using the Turabian Format or Chicago Manual must be submitted by the date specified in the syllabus. Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and This resource should be used as the basis for doing your research, the footnotes, and the bibliography for your term paper. Do NOT use the MLA format or any other format. Turabian is available in the Reference section of the UCC library. It does not circulate. It need not be purchased. The UCC Library has produced a pamphlet on the proper use of the Turabian, which is summarized on this Web site as Turabian Format. You may ask the UCC Library Reference Desk for a printed copy. Check out my other Information Literacy pages before you start your term paper. TERM PAPER DUE DATE: See Syllabus PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a deadly sin and will lead you straight to hell. It is defined in the Student Handbook. It can easily be avoided by using quotation marks or paraphrasing AND then footnoting (giving credit) to the source of the information. Please guard against this kind of cheating. You may find the following WEB pages useful: Doing Research provides basic information on how to pick a topic and begin the research process. Guidelines helps you to understand the process of writing a term paper. It tells you that you must cite your sources to avoid plagiarism and how to cite them. It explains the Chicago Manual on Style or Turabian format. It gives an example of a bibliography, a page of a term paper, and footnotes at the bottom of the page. Examples provides greater details about bibliographic entries and footnotes. [If you discover conflicting information about how to do something ask your instructor or follow my Model format.] There is additional useful information within the WEB pages entitled Annotated Bibliography. In particular the Model page gives you generic models on how to cite encyclopedias, books, articles in scholarly journals, and articles in popular magazines in a bibliography. This is the form that I want you to follow. It also alerts you to the fact that if your information comes from a data base, you must provide additional information. The WEB Citations page alerts you to the difficulties in citing WEB sources not found on a data base. The Data Bases page introduces you to the problems of using this library resource. Accessed
