Read a well-organized paragraph on one of the following:
1. Why people diet
2. Why people smoke
3. Why people lie
4. Why people use a credit card
5. Why men like sport cars
6. Why women like fashion
Assignment #2 - Due Feb. 1, 2007
Write a well-organized essay using the same topic as you did for your paragraph.
Include a thesis statement, supporting details, and examples. Make you
essay clear, and do not include information that is not part of your thesis.
Assignment # 3 - Due Feb. 8, 2007
1. Write a journal on each of the following topics:
a) Why sexes are treated differently
b) What happens to a person's family/friends/life when someone is depressed
2. Read the paragraph on page 9 and the essay on pages 10-11. Answer the
questions for
Exercises 6 and 7, pages 9-12. You can do the exercises in the book.
Assignment # 4 - Due Feb. 15, 2007
Write the final draft of your essay. Look at the suggestions that were
made on your first draft and the solutions that you wrote and revise and
proofread the essay. You must use the format outlined below.
1. Use a title page that includes the name of your essay, your name, and the
date. DO NOT WRITE any of this information on any other pages. Set
the margins at 1.25" for the top, and 1" for the left and right sides.
2. Use one of the following fonts: Arial (12), Tahoma (12), Times New Roman (14)
and double space.
3. Attach all drafts and evaluations to the essay.
Assignment # 5 - Due March 1, 2007
Write the first draft of your Cause/Effect Essay. Refer to your outline,
Unit 5 in your text, and our classroom discussions. After you have written
the essay, refer to the checklists on pages 141 and 142 of your text.
Assignment # 6 - Due March 8, 2007
1. Read the two articles on adoption and privacy. For EACH article,
write a summary of about 60 words.
2. After the summary, write a reaction to each that will include your opinion
about the article. At the end choose one side and write about 150 words on
why you chose that side.

Assignment # 7 - Due March 22, 2007
1.
Write the final draft of your essay. Look at the suggestions that were
made on your first draft, the peer review, and the checklist on Page 143. Be
prepared to show me the checklist in the next class. Refer to the
directions above under Assignment # 4 for the required format of your essay.
2. Write a journal of possible topics that you might use for your research
paper.
3. Read pages 207- 210 on summarizing. In your text on page 211, write a
summary of the final draft of this essay on the spaces provided under Exercise
4.
Assignment # 8 - Due March 29, 2007
1. Read the article, "Becoming A Writer," by
Russell Baker. When you are finished, write a summary.
2. Write a journal about the topic that you have selected/been assigned.
3. Prepare an outline of the topic that you have chosen or been assigned.
Assignment # 9 - Due April 5, 2007
1. Find one article from one of the UCC Library's Database. Read the
article. Write a summary of the article, your reaction/opinion, and how it
supports your thesis.
2. In the text, Read page 168. Do Exercises 2 (169) and 3(172)

1. Write the first draft of an analytical essay.
Refer to Unit 3: Process Essays, page 57. You can only write about one of
the following topics:
a. The steps/stages to becoming acculturated into a new society
b. How to preserve the environment
c. The steps to maintaining a personal relationship
d. How to choose a college
e. The steps/stages in overcoming grief

Assignment # 11 - Due April 19, 2007
Write the first draft of your research paper. Refer to the Checklists on
pages 196 and 197 of your text. Include relevant information from your
research sources. DO NOT COPY. For incorporating your information,
refer to Unit 8 on summarizing, paraphrasing, and synthesizing.
Assignment # 12 - Due April 26, 2007
1. Submit final outline and three summaries based on the sources that you have
used for your research paper.
2. Bring your articles to class next week to write the Bibliography.
3. In the textbook read the essay on pages 179-180. Answer the questions
on page 181.
4. Finish the "Washington and Lincoln" essay if you didn't during lab time.
Assignment # 13 - Due May 3, 2007
Your research paper is due by this date. You can leave it in my mailbox in
Room 414 or leave it in the envelope on my door, Room 405.
Rewrite your research paper following my standard formatting. Include your
summaries and outlines and reference sheet. They can be handed in prior to
the paper. Attach your journal and peer review.

Writing is a process. In order to write an effective academic essay, it is
necessary to understand the process and the steps.

Open up the T: Drive/Institute for Intensive English/Ishill/092/Problems with my
essay. Copy the file onto your student drive and save it. After your
essay has been returned to you, look at the comments that I made. Check
off the problem item. Under "Solutions" write how you will fix the
problem. Write your name on the paper, print 2 copies, and bring them to
class.

in tonight. How did you go about revising your essay? Do you feel
that you put enough effort into this assignment? Are you satisfied with
the essay? Why/why not? What did you have trouble doing? If given
the opportunity, what would you have done differently? Is there any area
that you are having difficulties with? Any other comments.
2. Open up the file named "Issues." You can find it on the T: Drive under
Institute for Intensive English/Ishill/092/Issues.
3. Save this file on your Student Drive.
4. Put your name on the paper, complete it, and print it for class discussion.

of the essay did you find the easiest/the most difficult? Did you
incorporate the sources into your essay? What way? Did you copy any
piece of information? Did you find paraphrasing difficult? What did
you have trouble doing? Was there any area that you had difficulties with? Any other comments.
2. Open up the file named "Washington and Lincoln." You can find it on the T: Drive under
Institute for Intensive English/Ishill/092/Washington and Lincoln. Follow
the directions and correct the errors. Bring the completed essay to class
next week.

For your final exam, you have to write
