1.
Continue researching and preparing for the Environment Essay. First Draft is due
12-10-04—our last class!
2.
Re-write
your essay about preferring New
York or New Jersey.
FOCUS:
·
Improve your Introduction.
·
Polish your Body (middle) paragraphs.
·
Improve your Conclusion
·
Check your grammar and comparisons.
You are responsible, even if I did not identify a problem like spelling
or verb.
·
Turn in you notes, planning, and all three (3) drafts of
the essay, newest stapled on top. If
you give me only two (2) drafts, you get zero on the third—the one that
counts most!
·
Type. No exceptions.
·
Use “Format for Professional Looking Papers” or lose
significant points.
Introduction:
REMEMBER: DO NOT START THE INTRO WITH THE MAIN IDEA (thesis) OF THE ESSAY!!! Start with background BEFORE the thesis!!
·
Intros have different
organization than other paragraphs!
·
Yes, they should
start with a sentence that lets your reader know the general subject, BUT
·
The Controlling Idea of
the essay should be the LAST sentence of the paragraph.
The Controlling Idea of an essay is usually called the THESIS.
Body:
·
Review the handout on
NY/NJ and make sure you have good comparisons in your Topic Sentences
·
Discuss both places in
every comparison.
·
Make sure your paragraph
matches your Topic Sentence—and only what is previewed in the Topic Sentence.
Conclusion:
·
For
this conclusion, I want you to REVIEW the key points of the body
paragraphs and the Controlling Idea (Thesis) that ends your Intro.
·
(Review
Conclusions are the most common type in College essays.)
