NOTES: Today in class we went over Chapter 1 and some of Ch. 2. In Chapter 2, we focused on several points:
A) Paragraphs with different purposes needing different organization. For example story paragraphs—narratives—often have organization by time, but in descriptive paragraphs time is often not important and description may follow another organizing system such as by location (a kitten nose to tail or a book case top to bottom. Expository paragraphs have many forms, depending on what you are explaining or comparing.
B) Page 10 is a MECHANICS lesson on the shape of an essay on the page. It is important that you turn in papers this way!
C) Beginning on page 11, the chapter describes the PROCESS of writing a paper. You need to do your papers this way for two important reasons. 1. I require that you do this.
2. You will need to use a process like this to be successful as you college assignments become more and more advanced and complicated.
Assignment:
1. Read to the end of Chapter 2. Re-read if you need to reread to understand. If you have problems, see me Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
2. Page 16-17. Follow instructions and do all activities on these pages. Write and bring in the ROUGH draft of a full-page paragraph (not ½ page). Choose one lifetime first—not a period of your life! Prepare and write about one lifetime first—maybe the first time you went to school or to your aunt’s house, or the first time you went to a dance or drove a car.
· Put your name and the date you turn in the paper in the top right corner.
· Give the paper the title “A Lifetime First.”
· Show me the notes and preparation on pages 16-17. (Do them before you write!!!) (I always want you to prepare before you write.)
3. Read Chapter 3, pages 18-30.Do Practices 1, 2, 3, and 7
4. Write again in the Circle Journals. Bring them to class.
REMEMBER:
If you are absent, you MUST turn in the HW to me or the secretary in 414 by Monday.
You must also get the new assignment from me, from a friend, or from my web site. Assignments will be posted on my web page by Monday night. Bring the new HW to the next class. There is no excuse, “I did not know.”
