ESL 091          Homework 3                                                               Interview 2nd / Holiday paragraph 1st

Assigned: 9-16-05                   Due 9-23-05

1.      Write a page in Circle Journals.

2.      Pages 25-27: Mechanics –punctuating sentences and FANBOYS (NOTE: All of these connectors called FANBOYS are used after commas when they combine two complete sentences.  Ex. “I read the chapter, and I did the homework.” “Joe read the chapter, but he did not write.”  “I was tired,  so I took a nap.”)

**Do practices 6 and 7 in the book or on paper.

3.      Rewrite the 4 paragraph interview of a classmate. THIS DRAFT WILL GET A LETTER GRADE (A/B/C/D/F).  You MUST turn in both drafts, with the new draft stapled in front.  ***BUY a stapler if you do not have one! They are $2.00 or $3.00 at most drug stores***

4.      Holiday writing assignment:  Read the assignment “Writing to Communicate” on page 30.  (Here, a holiday means a special day, not a vacation.) Follow all of the steps, and turn in on paper:

                         1) your brainstorming or free writing

                        2)  your topic outline or your tree diagram,

                        3) your rough draft, and

                        4) your final draft.

This paragraph should be long—one full page if you do not skip lines and do not            write    large.  If you write large, it will take more pages to equal one page.  I always like typing,             but it is not yet required.  Probably your next assignment must be typed, so practice!!!

Remember: a rough draft is as long as a final draft. It is just not as “polished” as a final          draft.

Reminder:  If you miss a class, the homework from that class must come to me the next day (Friday) or Monday at the latest, even if you do not have class!!!  Put it in my hand in room 405 or give it to a secretary in 414.  Thanks.  Never place it on my desk!

If you need me, I am available Monday and Wednesday 10:30 to 10:50 and 1:40 to ??? in my office, room 405.

2.      Most classes meet 2 or 3 times a week for 50 minutes

or 90 minutes.  Those classes get HW every day.

I have to give you 3 days HW every time we meet.

If you are absent, it is like missing 3 classes!
