ESL 091:021                                                   HW 5              (Expanded “Holiday” paper)

Homework:

Assigned: 9-30-05                  Due: 10-7-05

NOTE:  It is very important that you attend the class on 10-7-05.  We probably will do a writing in class for a grade.  (There is no midterm.  We do in-class writing and essay HWs instead of the midterm and final exams.)

1.      Write a page in Circle Journals.

2.      I collected the “Holiday” paragraphs today, but you should keep the copy of it with spaces between the paragraphs so that you can use it to plan a long ESSAY—5 or more paragraphs!

3.      Keep you “Holiday” stretched paragraphs to become the beginning of the longer, expanded, essay you are building from it.  The new assignment will use these.

I will collect these drafts on Thursday 2-24-05, review them, and return them to you so that you can prepare final, beautiful drafts for grades of the long paper.

Remember: A rough draft is as long as a final draft.  It is just not as “polished” as a final draft.

4.      Read Chapter 5.  Do exercises 1, 2, 3 and 4.  Exercises 3 and 4 must be on white lined 8 1/2 x

11” paper, not in the book.

2.      Most classes meet 2 or 3 times a week for 50 minutes or 90 minutes.  Those classes get HW every day.  I have to give you 3 days HW every time we meet.  And if you are absent, it is like missing 3 classes!  *****You MUST get the new assignment and bring it on time.  You should see me. on Monday.  Also, I post the HW on my college web site by Monday afternoon.

If you need me, I am available Monday and Wednesday 10:00 to 10:45 and 1:40 until the last student leaves.  If you need more help, you can call me at home and we can talk or make an appointment for another time, perhaps Tuesday or Thursday in my office room 405.
