ESL 091:021 HW 6 Adapting 1st Draft
Homework: 10-7-05 Due 10-14-05 Late papers will be penalized.
1. Write a page in Circle Journals.
2. Read Chapter 6 until you understand, or get my help, or get help in the ALC.
3. Carefully read “Writing to Communicate” on page 63-64. Then do 1,2,3, and 4 at the top of page 64. This is your note-taking for your essay, so do a good job. Do 2 and 3 on white lined 8 ½ x11” paper to hand in.
4. In you book, on the bottom of page 64, write in the names of the two places in the THESIS statement of the intro. Then you use the paragraph outline on 64-65 to plan the rest of the essay. You can do this in the book. You MUST copy the introduction from the book to start your essay, and later copy the conclusion to end your essay.
5. Then write a first draft of a paper about how YOU ADAPTED. (see #4, above) Make it LONG.
An example:
In the USA, I often drive a car to take care of daily business and shopping, but when I moved to China this summer I had no car and I found that there were no taxis and very few buses in the city where I lived. I adapted by walking a lot. As a result, I became thinner and in better shape, so walking was not a problem. I also adapted by learning where to buy things without having to walk far, and I learned the bus routes to places where I had to go.
(This paragraph is not perfect. Can you add a topic sentence? More?)
Remember: A rough draft is as long as a final draft. It is just not as “polished” as a final draft.
