Week 1 - Jan. 18

Introduction to course.  Do a 20-minute writing sample.  Go to the Computer Lab and set up accounts.   Type a sample paper to learn the format for all papers for this course. Homework: Buy the books for the course


Week 2 - Jan. 25
We worked on "Topic Sentences" p. 5 - 9;  Go to the Computer Lab and work on Skills Bank.
Homework: Do the editing exercises.  Write in your journal


Week 3 - Feb. 1

Collected first 4 journals; collected the subject-verb-agreement practice: Exercise 3; I checked off everyone who had completed typing the sample paper; In class, we did p. 9 - 12 ("Support", "Conclusion", and "Title").  We also read a sample composition titled, "Trapped in a Refrigerator".  I gave out the assignment for Paper #1.
Homework: Paper #1: A Memory (Draft 1); Work on Skills Bank;  Continue to work in your journal


Week 5 - Feb. 15

Handed back the journals; students worked in pairs to review Paper #1; I collected the papers with their reviews.  I reminded students about the Skills Bank Assignments.  You can now put in your Soc. Sec. number as your "User ID" for Skills Bank.  We discussed pg. 22, 23,and 24 in the text.  We discussed "Sentence Connectors" pg. 208 - 210.
Homework:  Continue to work on Skills Bank.  Write 9 sentences on a topic.  Use the sentence connectors on pg. 210: To add an idea (except also), to indicate result, and to indicate unexpected result.  Write 1 orginal sentence for each connector.  I will collect your assignment next week.  Remember to write in your journal.

Week 6 - Feb. 22

I collected journals today and Draft #2 of Paper 1.  I handed back last the homework on "Sentence connectors".  We prepared for Paper #2. In groups, students drew a sketch of a place based on a paragraph.  In class, students began Draft #1 of the second paper.
Homework: Write Draft #1 of Paper #2: Describe a special place;  Turn in your paper on Feb. 26th (the absolute latest!!!)
