Description
ESL 081 is a part of the fifth level
of ESL instruction at Union County College. The purpose of the course is
to help you become more familiar with contemporary American narrative and
expository readings. You will read newspaper articles, essays, articles
related to subjects in your books, and research information on the Internet.
You may read two works on contemporary topics. A second purpose of the
course is to help you learn how to write comments on the readings.

(if you don't already have one) Suggested: American Heritage Dictionary
4) Standard-sized lined 3-hole writing

Procedures & Activities

Both in-class and at-home readings
will be required. It is essential that all students do the readings in
order to participate in class discussions. If you do not do the reading,
you will not be allowed to participate in discussion. Many quiz and exam
questions will be based on class discussion.

Reqular quizzes will be given
to check your comprehension.

Reader Response Assignments:
Written reactions will be required after each reading assignment.

All assignments should be neatly
written or typed and labeled with your name, the date, and the chapters
being covered.

Summaries of academic articles
from various sources

A midterm and a final exam.

There may also be a midterm and
a final project

be based on overall performance:

homework preparation, participation

UF(stopped attending)

Poor attendance will negatively
affect your grade.

Students who do not attend
the final exam without notifying Prof. Neblett beforehand will receive
Fs for the final exam; and therefore, the final grade will be much lower.
