ESL 081 - Reading 1
Instructor: Prof. Elizabeth (Liz) Neblett
My e-mail address: neblett@ucc.edu Instructions for the Reader Response Assignment:
What is this assignment?
The Reader Response assignment will show me how well you've understood
what you've been reading. Most college reading courses require students
to write essays and responses to the literature, articles, and research
that they do for their classes. Students who are coming from Level 3 and
4 should be accustomed to doing this type of assignment.
What kind of writing should I do?
You can choose to do any of the following types of assignments for your
Reader Response assignment, but do not do the same type of writing every
week.
Copy a quotation from one of the chapters you've read in the novel. The
quotation must not be more than two to three lines long. In paragraph form,
explain what you thought about that quotation. Perhaps you found that section
to be very interesting, surprising, or important to the story. Or, perhaps
the quotation reminded you of something from your own experience.
Comment on something that happened in the chapter. Did you expect something
else to happen? Were you surprised or disappointed? Explain why.
How much do I have to write?
This is the big question. You should write one to two good paragraphs.
If you have particularly large handwriting, skip lines, and you will be
expected to write more. If you choose to type your responses, you must
double-space.
This is not a grammar class; however, you must make yourself understood.
If your writing is full of mistakes, it will be difficult to understand
and you will receive a lower grade. Use what you're learning in your grammar
and writing classes.
