Week 1 - Jan. 28

Review ESL 081 Course Outline and expectations for the course; Read The Man Who Couldn't Read. Discuss in groups. Individually, write your first Reader Response Paper.
Homework:Make sure that you have the book for the next class.

Week 2 - Feb. 4

Go to Computer Lab and work on Skills Banks Assignments; As a class, read the Prologue of Outbreak by Robin Cook. View maps of Africa, setting the scene; discuss important characters. Receive vocabulary sheet.
Homework:Read Chapters 1-2 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper. Comprehension Quiz on Chapters 1-2 next week.

Week 3 - Feb. 11
First Quiz on Outbreak, Chapters 1 -2. In groups, discuss review questions. Collect Reader Response Papers.
Academic Reading: Handout, pg. 10-15 Alternative Lifestyles. Read and discuss in class.
Homework: Read Chapters 3-4 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper. Do not write summaries of the chapters. Comprehension Quiz on Chapters 3-4 next week.

Week 4 - Feb. 18   - Snow Day; All classes cancelled.

Week 5 - Feb. 25
Collected Reader Response from Chapters 3 - 4. In groups, discuss the chapters. Watch video of an African ebola outbreak investigation. Academic Reading: Handout pg. 10-15, Discuss Test Taking exercise.
Homework: Read Chapters 5-6 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper. Do not write summaries of the chapters. Comprehension Quiz on Chapters 5-6 next week.

Week 6 - March 4
Collected Reader Response from Chapters 5-6. With whole class, answer the review questions.  Academic Reading: "How We Learn to Behave" pg. 16-19. Write definitions of new vocabulary.
Homework:Read Chapters 7-9 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper. Do not write summaries of the chapters. Finish Task 2 of Handout, pg. 19 "How We Learn to Behave".

Week 7 - March 11
Spring Break - Continue reading your book.
Week 8 - March 18
Collected Reader Response from Chapters 7-9; Answered review questions. In class reading: "Experts suspect mystery illness is virus", from USA Today; watched video of news reports and compared the TV news to the information in the USA Today article;
Homework:Midterm Exam: March 25 - Read Chapters 10-11 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper. Read the NYTimes article, "Mysterious Respiratory Illness Afflicts Hundreds Globally".(Contact Prof. Neblett for copies of the articles.) The midterm exam will consist of the following: General questions about Outbreak and the characters; specific questions on Chapters 10-11; questions about the NYTimes article; and one new reading;
Week 9 - March 25

Homework:Read Chapters 12-13 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper.

Week 10 - April 1
Review Exam Results; In class reading, "The Power of the Group"; worked on writing definitions of key terms in the text; worked on writing summaries.
Homework:Read Chapters 14 -15 of Outbreak. Write a Reader Response Paper.

Week 11 - April 8
Discussed Chapters 14 -15; 2 groups performed a role play from the chapters; summaries
Homework:Finish Outbreak.. Write a Reader Response Paper to the entire book.
 

Week 12 - April 15
Collected Reader Response papers. Discussed the ending of Outbreak. Watched the TV movie, "Virus". Gave out the Book Review Assignment.
Homework:Begin writing your book review

Week 13 - April 22
Computer Lab: Get information on other epidemics and outbreaks from the Internet. Do a practice review of a short story, "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov. Reminded students about their Skills Banks assignments.
Homework: Continue working on your book review.

Week 14 - April 29
Library Visit; learn how to use the library databases; work on book review of "The Fun They Had"; work on Library Assignment, due May 13th.
Homework: Book Review is due next week;

Week 15 - May 6th
Turn in book reviews;

Homework: Prepare for final exam; bring a self-addressed stamped postcard or envelope if you want your grade soon; otherwise, wait until the grades arrive in the mail - a few weeks after the semester ends.

Week 16 - May 13th
Final Exam; Last class; Leave your self-addressed stamped envelopes or postcards, or e-mail addresses if you want your grades by the following week.
