MAT 016 Online

MAT 016 is a four hour course. Since it is developmental, you will not receive college credit, nor will the course grade affect your cumulative average.

 

TEXT FOR THE COURSE:  Introductory Algebra, 6^th Edition, D.F. Wright, Hawkes Publishing,  which comes with a set of CD’s Adventure Learning Systems: Introductory Algebra . The CD’s provide the actual course material.  Check with the course page for syllabus/calendar for the list of topics and the dates due. You should keep up with the dates listed – however, you may work faster if you want! This semester we will cover the material in Chapters 4,5,6,7,8,9,and 10.

or at the UCC bookstore… be sure to get the correct book! Do not buy a used book and CD’s – you will not be able to use the software because it will be registered in someone else’s name!  (If you are continuing from last semester’s onlne MAT 015 class, you are using the same book and software.) If you wind up with a used book, you will have to pay the publisher another $50 to get the software registered in your name.

 

 

 

TESTING:

During the semester: Each section of material on your CD has a “CERTIFY” option – this provides quiz problems. After successfully completing each “CERTIFY” section, you will be given a code to verify that you have done the work successfully. You must enter that code on the course webpage at http://www.quantsystems.com/uccida . When you install the software in your computer, you should be able to set it up to automatically register your certification. When the software asks for a course code, type in UCCIda. Since several other online courses are sharing this page, when presented with options, be sure to choose the correct Professor JEAN LANE and the correct course MAT 016300. After this is done the first time, the computer will automatically record your work in the correct course in the future.  Be sure to check the syllabus/calendar on the webpage to keep current with the material.

NOTE!! You will need the authorization code you got from the publisher every time you access that page – save the file they email you on your desktop or hard drive!!

 

I will also send you 4 hand-in homework assignments by email.  Hand-in assignments can be either (1) emailed to me through the WebCT page or (2) left in my faculty mailbox at the Cranford campus or (3) sent by US mail to Prof. Jean Lane, Union County College, 1033 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ 07016. US-mailed assignments must be postmarked no later that the due date. If you email the assignment or drop it off, it must reach me by the due date. I will not accept late assignments. If you show your work, I will be able to write comments on it.

 

The certifications and the hand-in homework assignments will count as 30% of your final grade.

 

Midterm Examination: there will be a midterm exam covering Chapters 4, 5, and 6  from OCTOBER 11 to OCTOBER 27. You will have to come to campus to take this test. (If you are a student at another college in NJ, I will make arrangements with that college to administer the test. If you are an out-of-state student, you will have to contact a local college and send me the name of the person who heads their testing center.)  Note that I have given a long period of time because I realize you might not be able to get your book and software for a week at the beginning of classes!

 

End of the semester: there will be a proctored cumulative final exam, made up by me, and a proctored multiple-choice Basic Skills Test, required as a course-exit-test and administered by the college. These are not given on the same day, and you must take both. The date for the Basic Skills test should be the evening of DECEMBER 15 . My FINAL EXAM has to be taken from  DECEMBER 13 to DECEMBER 20 (but not on Dec 15 because of the BST!!!) – no later because the semester ends and grades must be handed in to the College.

 

Please Note: both the midterm and final exam periods I have specified above include Saturdays --- the Assessment Center is open on Saturdays as well as two evenings during the week, in addition to its regular daytime schedule. The hours will be listed on the admission slip that I will send you for  each test, at the appropriate time.

 

( Again, if you are not a Union County College student, we will make some arrangements for you to take these tests off-campus if necessary.)

 

You cannot use a calculator on either test – that’s college policy. At home, you can do as you like, and there are a few exercises in the software that require a calculator.

 

GRADING:

Certifications/homework count as 30% of your course grade.

Midterm exam counts as 35% of your course grade.

Final exam counts as 35% of your course grade.

Passing the Basic Skills Test is required to pass/exit the course.

"A" average of 90-100

"B+" 85-89

"B" 80-84

"C+" 75-79

"C" 70-74

"D+" 65-69

"D" 60-64

"F" Below 60

 

DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES:

No late withdrawals in any mathematics course. Last date to withdraw from any UCC course is October 28.

Beginning in Fall 1994, anyone who wants to take a mathematics course for the third time must successfully retake the prerequisite course before the third attempt is allowed. No fourth attempts will be allowed on any math course. Grades of W and F count as attempts.

You must have a grade of C or better to continue to  MAT 119, if this is required for your program of study. For MAT 117, a D is okay.
