Monday, December 8, 2008

MAKE-UPS: No make-ups, except in rare situations. Since it is unfair for me to give someone extra time to study when his or her classmates are not given the same consideration, it is assumed that you will not even ask for a make-up exam unless extremely unusual circumstances (such as being hospitalized on the day of the exam) warrant it and they can be documented (such as with discharge papers from the hospital or emergency room exit form). In such an instance, you or someone for you must call ext. 4265 prior to the exam and leave a message. If no one calls, no make-up will be given. When you miss an exam, you automatically receive a grade of 0 points on the exam.

FINAL EXAM: Comprehensive, worth a total of 200 points.

QUIZZES:  There will be 6 quizzes given during the semester.  The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.  There are absolutely no make-ups of quizzes for any reason, since the lowest grade is dropped.  If you miss a quiz, you earn a grade of 0 points on that quiz.  Since 5 quizzes will count towards your grade and each quiz is worth 50 points, you will have 5 * 50 = 250 points total towards your grade in quizzes.  These quizzes are short and given at the beginning of class.  If you are late for class, you will not be given any extra time to complete the quiz.

PROJECTS: There will be one project assigned. This project is due Wednesday, November 19, 2008.  This project is worth 100 points. For each day a project is late, you will lose 50 points from the grade of the project. If a project is due on Monday and is turned in on Wednesday, you will earn a grade of zero points. You will be given two weeks to complete the project; hence you should begin working on the project as soon as it is assigned. Projects are never to be left under my office door. If the project is not handed to me directly in class, then leave it in my mailbox. If a project is left in my mailbox after our class has begun, it is considered handed in a day late. If a project is turned in at class more than ten minutes after class has begun, it is considered a day late. This is out of fairness to the other students in class who turn in their projects on time. This project involves the use of Maple.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned every class, and will generally not be collected. (See the attached daily homework assignment sheet.) It is important to complete all assigned work and to come to class prepared with questions. All collected homework assignments must be completed satisfactorily in order to earn a passing grade in this course.

EXPECTATIONS: You must show all work on all problems on the exams, quizzes, final, projects, and homework to earn full credit. If work is not shown, no credit will be earned, even if the answer is correct.

ATTENDANCE: It is not a good idea to miss too many classes. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what was covered and to make up the work before the next class. If you are absent and cannot reach anyone prior to the next class, you should complete the homework for the next two sections on the daily homework sheet and stop by my office during hours or the ALC for help with any work you missed that you do not understand. Absence is not an excuse for incomplete work.

GRADING: There are a maximum possible total of 1,000 points. 900 through 1,000 points is an A, 851 through 899 points is a B+, 800 through 850 is a B, 751 through 799 points is a C+, 700 through 750 points is a C, 651 through 699 points is a D+, 600 through 650 points is a D, and below 600 points is an F.

TUTORING: If you need help, free tutoring is available in the ALC, in the Library.

OFFICE: My office is room N1-3 in Cranford.

WITHDRAWALS: You must withdraw before the withdrawal period ends, by October 28, 2008. I will not sign or authorize late withdrawals. This is a departmental policy. Do not take this responsibility lightly. You will not be able to withdraw after that date.

COURSE REPEATS: The following is departmental policy. "Including grades of F and W, any student who wants to take a Math course for the third time must successfully take (or retake) the prerequisite course immediately before the third attempt will be allowed. Absolutely no fourth attempts will be allowed."

CHEATING: PLEASE DON’T. If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing you can expect to find yourself before the Judicial Committee defending yourself against possible expulsion.

TEXT BOOK: You are required to have a copy of Calculus, Eighth Edition, by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards at every class.

STUDY TIME: As this is a four credit college level course, you should expect to spend a minimum of 12 to 20 hours outside class time working on material for this course each week.

PREREQUISITE: A grade of C or better in MAT 144.

COREQUISITE: You are required to take MAT 148 this semester while you are taking this course. Please register for Mat 148 sections 051. That course will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:05-10:00 through October 20th.

COURSES FOLLOWING MAT 171: At least a C in MAT 171 is a prerequisite for MAT 172. If you earn a D, D+, or an F in this course, you must retake MAT 171 before taking MAT 172.

MATERIALS FOR CLASS: You are required to bring the following materials to each class: textbook, notebook, the TI-89 graphic calculator, pencil, and an eraser.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES:  No cell phones, beepers, palm pilots, or computers of any kind may be on during class time.  All such devices must be turned off for the duration of class.
