Objectives and Goals:

This course is designed for liberal arts and education majors. Its goal is to give students an appreciation of the beauty and utility of mathematics, and to give them a better idea of what mathematics is and where it can be applied through readings, writings, practical exercises, and discussions.

Students will:

bulletRead and write about mathematics proficiently
bulletDiscuss mathematical topics, articulating mathematical questions and concepts
bulletDevelop critical thinking skills as demonstrated through communications & independent projects and research
bulletReflect on readings and discussions, sharing reactions
bulletResearch mathematical topics independently, demonstrating information literacy and utilizing technology to expand knowledge base
bulletApply content knowledge in completing exercises and meaningful, practical projects
bulletDevelop an appreciation of mathematics as a science, demonstrating an understanding of its place in the world, many careers, and life in general

Assessment:

Homework=15%

There will be readings and/or posted notes assigned for each topic, with related homework problems. The discussion board should be utilized for questions and help. Additionally, students will be required to submit specified assignments to me via WebCt email.

Weekly Discussion=20%

Assignments will be posted weekly, specifically for discussion. Responses must be posted by Thursday of each week. This requirement serves as a structured forum to communicate mathematically in order to reflect on and make sense of new concepts.

Topic Projects = 45%

Students will complete three projects relating to course content. Based on topic discussions, research a related concept or application for class presentation, which may be completed individually or with a partner. There are two components, the paper or project, and the presentation to the class.

A paper must be three to five pages in length, using a twelve point font. The exact length depends on the content and number of participants. Upon approval, specific requirments will be determined based upon the nature of the paper. It is expected to be well written, following standard rules for college writing. A project may be submitted in place of a paper. The project may be some type of application of the topic that can be shared in an online format. The presentation must include the actual submission online, a mathematical explanation/summary, and discussion. Be prepared to answer questions from classmates as well as the instructor.

A proposal must be submitted for instructor approval. The assignement will not be accepted if this requirement has not been fulfilled.

Final Research Paper=20%

Each student in this course will be expected to complete a four to five page research paper independently, using 12-point font, which will demonstrate the connection between mathematics and the student’s discipline or other interests. Students will use a mix of print media and electronic resources to complete this requirement, evaluating, synthesizing, and documenting their sources in an approved style. (e.g. MLA, APA). This assignment is to be posted on the discussion board as a basis for our final class discussion.

There will be progressive penalties for all late submissions.

Additional Information :

Academic Support : The UCC Academic Learning Center provides free tutoring. Contact the ALC directly for specific hours at each campus.

Library : Make use of the UCC Library to conduct course research.

http://www.ucc.edu/Library/default.htm

There are some tutorials for teaching searching. These are available at http://faculty.ucc.edu/library/default.htm There are four tutorials that teach basic concepts of keyword and boolean searching. They take about 10 minutes apiece to review. They are to help students with the concepts, before using the databases. Database passwords are available at the reference desk. Students must present their student ID to get them. They cannot be e-mailed or posted electronically for security reasons, since they are restricted to UCC student use.

Extra Credit: All students may choose to submit a typed summary outline of semester notes for approximaely 12 points. This assignment is due at then end of the semester, with a draft is due for review mid-semester. It will not be accepted late. Good attendance is required to receive credit for this assignment.

Withdrawals: All withdrawals must be done officially by the college's posted deadline of March 23. Late withdrawals will not be approved unless there are unusual extenuating circumstances.

* College policy requires permission of the Department before students may register for a third attempt of a particular course. No third attempts will be allowed for any mathematics course unless the student involved successfully completes the prerequisite for that course immediately before the third attempt. No fourth attempts will be permitted except in extremely unusual circumstances.

Review the Student Handbook for all academic college policies, including cheating and plagiarism.

References may be provided for students with a good attendance and work record. It is proper protocol to obtain permission to list someone as a reference. All requests must be in writing with pertinent information. Please allow two weeks for completion of this request.
