ATTENDANCE: You are expected to be on time for classes, and attend classes for the entire period. (Entering or leaving while class is in session is disruptive.) You are responsible for knowing the material covered or assigned during your absence from class (including assignments given, and quiz and test dates). You are also expected to pay attention and participate in class (including doing problems given as class work). You are to be prepared for class (having homework assignments done, having a pencil/pen and paper for taking notes and doing class work). HOMEWORK: You are expected to do all homework assignments. Some homework will be collected and graded. If a homework assignment is to be handed-in, I will let you know when the assignment is given. (Assignments to be graded will not be accepted late.) ASSIGNMENTS, QUIZ AND TEST DATES, and other pertinent class information will be posted on my website: http://faculty.ucc.edu/math-schaffer/ (Click on the link for your class.) GRADED ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments which are to be graded will be announced in class and must be turned in when due. (You will not get credit for late assignments - no exceptions.) There will be a total of 6 graded assignments (some of which may be in-class assignments). QUIZZES: There will be 6 quizzes. Quiz dates will be announced in advance. Each quiz will take about 10 minutes and will be worth 10 points. No make-ups or extra time will be given for quizzes. (NOTE: On quiz days class will be in session for the entire period.) TESTS: There will be 2 tests, a final exam, and the Computation part of the Basic Skills Test. Actual test dates and sections to be covered will be given at least 1 week in advance. The final exam and the computation basic skills test will cover material from the entire semester and will be given as scheduled by the College. The Computation Basic Skills Test is scheduled to be given Monday, December 15 and must be passed as one of the requirements of the course. (There will be no classes on that day.) A second chance for the Computation Basic Skills Test is scheduled during the final exam period. The specific day and times will be given later in the semester. If you miss a test, you must contact me (at the above phone no. or e-mail address) no later than 2 weekdays after the test date. (If you email me or leave a phone message for me, follow-up to make sure that I received your message.) You must give your reason (in writing) for missing a test, and arrange for and take a make-up test within one week of the scheduled in-class test date. (The week includes days in which classes are not in session.) No more than one make-up test is allowed. Make-up tests will be more difficult and no partial credit will be given. The final exam and the Computation Basic Skills Test must be taken at the scheduled time. GRADES: Graded assignments, quizzes, and tests that are missed will count as a grade of zero. (See above rules for make-ups.) The final exam must be taken at the scheduled time. Your final grade will be calculated as follows: graded assignment/quiz grade - (total number of points from quizzes and graded assignments- maximum: 100 points) - 25% of final grade 2 tests - 50% of final grade final exam - 25% of final grade
You will be REQUIRED to have a PASSING AVERAGE (at least 60%) FOR THE COURSE MATERIAL, AT LEAST 50% ON THE FINAL EXAM and PASS THE BASIC SKILLS COMPUTATION TEST in order to get a passing grade (D or better) for the course.
Grading Scale: A 90-100 C 70 - 76 B+ 87 - 89 D+ 67 - 69 B 80 - 86 D 60 - 66 C+ 77 - 79 F below 60 NOTE: You must get a grade of C or better in order to go on to your next math class.
If you miss the final exam, you must contact me at (908)-497-4249 by 9:00 a.m. of the following day. (Written proof of the reason for an absence from the final exam and an acceptable excuse -such as illness, jury duty, or death in the immediate family - will be required.) CALCULATORS may not be used on assignments/quizzes/tests/final exam/Basic Skills Test. CHEATING (including allowing others to copy your work) will not be tolerated and may result in a grade of zero and/or dismissal from the College. They must stay off and be put away during the entire class period. No text messages during class. Headphones may not be used during class and must be put away. Late withdrawals must be approved and signed by me.) DEPARTMENT POLICY: Counting W and F, no one will be given a third attempt at a mathematics course unless he/she successfully re-takes the prerequisite course first.
