Math 011   Assignment # 2   Due Monday, Oct. 6 for MWF classes

Due Tuesday, Oct. 7 for TR classes

You may consult with other people, but the work must be your own. Show all work on a separate piece of paper. Make sure that you do it neatly, and have your name and section number on all of your papers.

1)   Do the division problem  4357 ÷ 41   showing one step at a time. (Follow the example below.)

2)    Write out (in words) the steps to be done for each of the following operations. Write it out so that someone who does not know how to do the problem will understand what to do. (See the example below.) For each type of problem, also give an example (and work it out).

      a)   multiplying three fractions

      b)   dividing fractions

Example (for problem # 1)

To show the steps for the division problem  6248 ÷ 28 show the following

 28

 28         [ 62 ÷ 28 → 2 ]

28

      - 56             [ 2( 28 ) = 56 ]

Example (for problem # 2)

To write out the steps for finding the prime factorization of a composite number (for example, 24) you might write the following. (The example can be done as you give the steps, if you prefer.)

Find a number that the composite number is divisible by (other than 1 and itself).

   24 is divisible by 3

Divide the composite number by the number you found.

    24 ÷ 3 = 8

Write the composite number as a product (multiplication problem) of the number you divided by and the quotient that you got.

    24  =  3 ( 8 )

If any of the factors (numbers in the multiplication) are not prime, continue to write those factors as products until all of the factors are prime numbers. (Factors that are prime will stay the same.)

    8 is not prime, so  8 = 2 ( 4 )

    So now we have   24 = 3 ( 2 ) ( 4 )

    4 is not prime, so 4 = 2 ( 2)

    So, now we have   24 = 3 ( 2 ) ( 2 ) ( 2)

    The prime factorization of  24 is   3 ( 2 ) ( 2 ) ( 2)
